Fly Into the School Year: Exploring the Science of Rotary Wing Aviation

What makes a helicopter fly, hover, turn, and maneuver through the air?

Lukas Berg and Brenton Ausen, current and former U.S. Army Black Hawk pilots for an inside look at the science, engineering, and real-world applications of rotary wing aviation.

Students will explore how principles of aerodynamics, forces, motion, and engineering come together in helicopter flight and learn how pilots apply these concepts when making decisions in complex, real-world environments. Presenters will draw on their experiences flying Black Hawk helicopters as well as their current work in aerospace engineering, research, and advanced manufacturing to connect classroom STEM concepts with aviation careers and applications.

This virtual session will also introduce students to the many pathways that can lead to careers in aviation, aerospace, engineering, research, and related STEM fields. Students will have an opportunity to ask questions and hear firsthand what it is like to study, design, research, and operate technologies that take flight.

Lukas Berg currently serves as Chief of Staff at Georgia Tech’s Advanced Manufacturing Pilot Facility, as well as Director of Education & Workforce Development for the Georgia Tech Manufacturing Institute. Brenton is currently a Master of Science graduate student at the Georgia Institute of Technology in the Aerospace Engineering Department in preparation to teach in the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department at the United States Military Academy. His focus is on vertical lift aerodynamics and conducts research in the Computational and Experimental Rotorcraft Engineering and Aerodynamics Lab (CEREAL).
